I work almost exclusively in Nerikomi, a Japanese technique in which coloured clays are layered, folded and laminated by hand. The pattern isn't painted on and it isn't glaze: it runs through the entire wall of the piece. Cut a Nerikomi block open and the image is inside, the way rings are inside a tree. Every piece begins as such a block — assembled over hours, sliced, pressed and shaped — and each cut reveals a pattern that has never existed before and can't be repeated.
I came to clay through architecture. During my studies I was drawn to the small scale — furniture, wood, photography — and at some point I sat down at a wheel. That was it. After my Master of Arts and a few years in the profession, I left Munich for the countryside and opened the studio in 2021. The architecture never quite left. Nerikomi is construction: a material assembled layer by layer, where the structure is the surface. My pieces are delicate, some just millimetres thin — but they are made to be used.
